General debate on the 2024 state budget bill and the multiannual financial programming bill, opened after the finance minister and the economy minister presented the budget, the stability and growth programme and the national reform programme.
In the budget debate the government defended the housing package announced on 31 January and the bill it hopes the Chamber will pass in the first half of May, while majority speakers described the crisis in the building sector.
Defence spending in the 2024 budget was set out by the finance minister and taken up by the majority speakers, including the NATO 2% target and the return for Luxembourg firms.
The economy minister presented the energy transition part of the national reform programme, and the finance minister and majority speakers set out the budget lines for renewables, grids and the electricity price cap.
The majority speakers answered the charge of a socially cold budget, citing the share of social transfers, the family ministry envelope, the take-up of benefits and the planned national anti-poverty action plan.
